I am working on alternative proteins for the textile industry. There is considerable overlap between alternative protein for textiles and for food. The goal is the same as with alternative protein for foods- reduce reliance on animal-derived feedstocks (and also plastic). The technology is also very similar in that I am growing alternative raw materials for textile in microbes and incorporating plant-based proteins, followed by post-processing into textile fibers, which have many similarities to post-processing plant proteins into meat-like fibers. In addition to my work in the Kaplan Lab,.
